美國華盛頓州開全美先河,准許用死人遺體製作堆肥,意味人死後化為泥土,滋養大地。此舉可減少土葬及火化釋出的二氧化碳排放量。

華盛頓州長英斯利周二簽署新法案,新葬法將於明年五月起生效,當地人死後,可選擇把遺體化為適用於園藝的肥料,回歸大地。這意味華盛頓州人死後,除了土葬和火化之外,還多了一個選擇,就是成為含有遺體肥的土壤,最後會交給家屬,他們可以用來種植花木蔬果。

業界說,堆肥葬自然、安全又環保,不會佔據土地資源,也有助於減少碳排放。而堆肥葬的作法是,把遺體放進堆放木屑和稻草等發酵材料的容器中,讓它密封分解一個月,最後可以產生兩個推車輛的營養泥土。

總部設於西雅圖、第一家提供人類遺體堆肥服務公司的創辦人斯佩德(Katrina Spade),和華盛頓州立大學合作,透過捐贈的遺體進行臨床實驗,把遺體放在裝有苜蓿、木屑和稻草的鋼製容器內,封閉30天。遺體會被微生物自然分解,最後轉化成乾燥、蓬鬆且富有養分的肥料,類似在苗圃店面購買的堆肥,適合種植蔬菜。
