【加拿大日】每年7月1日，全國齊聲唱起《O Canada》，但你又知不知道，這首國歌原來經歷過百年演變，才成為今日的代表曲目？由法文創作、英文改詞，到近年性別用字改革，每句歌詞都蘊含住加拿大人對平等、多元同歸屬感的追求。《O Canada》不僅是一首旋律優美的國歌，更凝聚了加拿大人的歷史、文化與信念。當下次再次唱起，或許會對其歌詞背後的故事、價值與演變有更深體會。
原版為法文創作
《O Canada》最早於於1880年首次演出，是為魁北克的魁北克日（Saint-Jean-Baptiste Day）而創作，歌詞以法文寫成，並非一開始就是官方國歌。這首歌是由魁北克副省長委託創作，作曲家Calixa Lavallée和法文詞作家Adolphe-Basile Routhier合作完成。
英文歌詞並非翻譯
1908年，《Collier’s Weekly》舉辦《O Canada》英文歌詞徵集比賽，由 Mercy E. Powell McCulloch 勝出，但其版本未被廣泛採用。當時亦有不少人嘗試翻譯法文原詞，但最受歡迎的版本，是由滿地可律師 Robert Stanley Weir 所創作。
Weir 的 1908 年版本刪去原法文中的宗教意象內容。其後，他於1913年、1914年及1916年先後修改歌詞，當中最具代表性的變動是在1913年，將「thou dost in us command」改為「in all thy sons command」，這句後來成為國歌性別爭議的焦點。
1980年正式立法為國歌
儘管《O Canada》早已成為國內大小典禮的指定曲目，但直至1980年7月1日，加拿大國會才正式通過《國歌法案》（National Anthem Act），確認其為法定國歌，成為建國百周年的重要象徵。
歌詞曾多次修改
1913年加入的英文歌詞「in all thy sons command（統領您眾兒子）」，象徵愛國忠誠，但亦引起性別專屬的爭議。經過多年 爭取，國會最終於2018年通過修訂為「in all of us command（統領着我們全體）」，更貼近現代社會的平等價值觀。
校園版本各有不同
在加拿大不少省份，例如安大略省，學生每天須在校內演唱《O Canada》。部分學校會根據學生年齡或語言背景調整旋律與用詞，更會加入原住民語言、旁遮普語等多語版本，體現本地的多元文化。
已有十多種語言版本
《O Canada》現時已被翻譯成十多種語言，包括 Cree、Ojibwe、Mi’kmaq、Inuktitut 等原住民語言。在不同地區與場合，例如國慶活動、奧運或校內典禮中，均有不同語言版本共同演出。
入籍加拿大需要唱《O Canada》
根據加拿大公民入籍程序，所有新移民在正式成為公民前，需出席宣誓儀式並唱誦《O Canada》。這項儀式不僅象徵對憲法與國家的承諾，亦透過國歌加深新公民對加拿大身份的認同與歸屬感。
《O Canada》成為國歌前會唱甚麼？
在《O Canada》成為加拿大國歌之前，加拿大並沒有一首法定的國歌，過去曾有多首不同的歌曲被非正式地用作愛國歌曲，包括《God Save the king》、《The Maple Leaf Forever》等。
即使現時《O Canada》已成為法定國歌，但《God Save the King》仍被承認為加拿大的皇家頌歌（Royal Anthem），在部分 皇家儀式、軍事場合或對君主效忠的場合演奏。
